MellowSleep Mattress Review

30 nights of testing by 3 sleepers. Here's why it's good — but not great.

Bottom Line

The MellowSleep mattress delivers on cooling — we measured 3-4°F cooler surface temps than standard memory foam. Motion isolation is excellent for couples. But edge support is just okay, and stomach sleepers struggled. Good for hot sleepers who don't need premium edge support.

✓ What We Loved

  • Cooling cover actually works
  • Excellent motion isolation (couples will love)
  • Good pressure relief for side sleepers
  • Reasonable price for the quality
  • Responsive, bouncy feel (not stuck-in-mud)
  • 100-night trial reduces risk

✗ What Could Improve

  • Edge support is mediocre
  • Not supportive enough for stomach sleepers
  • Cooling effect fades after ~8 months
  • Initial off-gassing lasts 3-4 days
  • Only one firmness option

Sleeper-Type Test Results

We had three testers (side, back, stomach sleepers) each spend 10 nights on this mattress:

4.2
Side Sleepers
⭐⭐⭐⭐
4.0
Back Sleepers
⭐⭐⭐⭐
3.2
Stomach Sleepers
⭐⭐⭐

Side Sleepers — 4.2/5 ⭐

The winner here. Shoulder and hip sink in just enough to keep spine aligned. Pressure points were minimal — better than our Casper test unit. The cooling cover was noticeably appreciated here since side sleepers have more body contact with the mattress.

Back Sleepers — 4.0/5 ⭐

Good lumbar support, though some testers wanted slightly firmer support under the hips. The medium-firm feel works well for most back sleepers. No complaints about overheating.

Stomach Sleepers — 3.2/5 ⭐

The problem area. Hips sink too much, creating lower back strain. If you're strictly a stomach sleeper, look at firmer options like the Purple or Tuft & Needle Original. Combo sleepers (stomach + side) found it tolerable but not ideal.

Performance Breakdown

Cooling — 4.5/5 ⭐

The standout feature. We used an infrared thermometer on the mattress surface throughout the night. At the 6-hour mark, the MellowSleep mattress surface measured 80.3°F — compared to 83.7°F on a standard memory foam mattress in the same room temperature (68°F).

That 3.4°F difference is noticeable. Hot sleepers will appreciate this. The phase-change material in the cover genuinely works, though the effect does fade slightly after 8-9 months of use.

Motion Isolation — 4.8/5 ⭐

Excellent for couples. We did the "wine glass test" and dropped a 20lb weight on the other side of the bed. The glass barely wobbled. One tester said their partner getting up at 6am no longer woke them up — something their old innerspring couldn't manage.

Edge Support — 3.0/5 ⭐

The weak point. Sitting on the edge, you'll compress about 4-5 inches. Sleeping near the edge is okay but you'll feel the roll-off if you're within 3-4 inches of the perimeter. Not a dealbreaker for most, but couples who need every inch of a Queen might find this limiting.

Durability Expectations

We've been testing this mattress for 8 months. So far, no sagging or body impressions beyond normal break-in. The cooling cover's effect has decreased maybe 15-20% from day one, which is expected for phase-change materials. For a sub-$800 hybrid, the build quality is solid.
